The new Spanish archaeological mission in Egypt, —Reconstruction Project of the Colossus of Amenhotep III in The Temple of Amun-Ra in Karnak—, is a project of the University of Córdoba in collaboration with the Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism of the Arab Republic of Egypt.
The project is directed by Dr. Marina Esteve Pérez (Málaga, 1992), one of the youngest directors in Egypt. The Egyptologist has extensive archaeological experience in Spain and Egypt. The co-director Isabel Plumed (Valencia, 1968) is a restorer and Egyptologist, specialized in drawing and archaeological reconstruction, with extensive experience with the DAI. They are assisted by Dr. Pedro Marfil, academic supervisor of the University of Córdoba and Saady Zaki, director of restoration of Upper Egypt.
The project officially began in March 2023, with the aim of rebuilding the largest colossus ever restored in Egypt, 25 meters high, belonging to Pharaoh Amenhotep III. However, the UCO committee that directs the project, Marina, Isabel and Pedro, has been studying and monitoring the project since 2020. An interdisciplinary team made up of 17 Spanish, one Slovak, 15 Egyptian specialists and a large team of workers, who will complete this group of almost 150 people, with the aim of reconstructing history.
